Please tell us a little about yourself.
I was born in Russia and moved to Israel when I was 13. I also worked in the U.S. for about a year. Professionally, I am a linguist and work at a university as a lecturer. And now I have also another profession, which is writing. And I am also a mother, which, I suppose, is yet another profession. :)

Tell us about your latest book.
This is a little bit tricky. I write in Russian, and the latest book I have completed is a fantasy adventure novel. But I believe that here, I should write about the latest (and meanwhile, the only) book that has been translated to English. This is a historical fantasy romance novel “Half a Step Away from Love”. I have to admit it’s more of romance than fantasy. The events take place in an imaginary country, but while working on the book, I took many of the details from 18th century Europe. The novel is largely about the confrontation between lord Cameron Estley, a nobleman and an advisor of the duke, and Inessa Antego, a lady-in-waiting to the duke’s sister. In the world of palace intrigue, these two are on the opposite sides, and we get a “from hatred to love” romance story. The book includes adventures, intrigue and a love story that develops step by step. Or even “half a step by half a step”. :)

What do you have coming out in the future?
I am finishing writing the third book whose action takes place in the world of “Half a Step Away from Love”.

Is your book a stand-alone or a series?
It can be read alone, the story is completed. However, I have written another book about the same world but different heroes, and in fact, one character from the first book appears there as well. And, as I have mentioned, I am now finishing the third book of the series. The principal characters are different ones yet again, but many characters from the first two books appear in certain episodes.

Why romance and what makes your particular brand of romance special?
That’s a very difficult question to answer! It’s easy for me to say why it’s fantasy. I always loved reading fantasy novels, starting with Tolkien’s books, and I’ve been interested in myths, legends, different retellings of fairy tales and so on. But as for romance… I have no idea. I can only say that at the time I started writing books in this genre, I hadn’t read anything of the sort. I had read mainly epic fantasy and adventures in fantasy worlds. And some contemporary romance. But never an interaction of romance and fantasy. And still, somehow this came… I can only say that when I think of a new plot, the first thing coming to mind is generally the romantic line, and everything else is built around this line afterwards.

Is romance the only genre that you write in or do you write in other genres? If so what other genres do you write in?
I’d say all the novels I write include romance, but there is always an intertwinement of several genres. Romance, adventure, fantasy, a detective story, humor – all of these are typically present, but the proportions vary.

In the scheming world of palace intrigue, Inessa Antego is in her element. Being the first lady-in-waiting to the Duke's sister, she won't stop at anything to please her mistress. Cancel an unwanted wedding? Easy. Show a secret lover out of the Duchess' bedchamber? Not a problem. Steal a portrait which compromizes the Duke? All you need is ask. Never mind she does it all with a little help from the palace ghosts. It's true that ghosts' friendship comes with strings attached, but what's a few favors between friends?

The only problem is, Inessa has to play her scheming game against Lord Cameron Estley. Who is smart, clever and painfully handsome. Can she successfully juggle her lady's interests and those of her own heart? Especially considering that hate is only half a step away from love?

Do you ever base your characters on real people in your life?
Only certain elements. Some trait, attitude or attribute. But not the whole personality. I’ve recently read some author stating that characters are born in the course of the writing process. I absolutely agree.

How have your real life experiences influenced your writing?
A lot. Of course, the books are not autobiographic. You know, I have never seen a dragon, I don’t speak to ghosts and don’t participate in sword fights. But real life experiences affect our worldview, our value system, our belief in what is possible and what is unnatural. And that, in turn, is definitely reflected in the way we write. There are also more specific experiences that played a role: for instance, the fact that I have experienced immigration helped me understand those of my characters who had to move from one country to another.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Oh, there are many things I like to do, but I hardly ever have time for them! Normally, when I have “free time”, that means I sit down with my laptop and write novels. I work at a university, which involves teaching, research and administrative work, I have a family, and I also write books. That leaves practically no time for anything else. But, of course, I love reading, I enjoy watching movies, and I love theater.

What was your road to publishing like? Tell us about it.
I’ve been uploading the novels I was writing, chapter by chapter, on a certain Russian website. It was the biggest website where authors could upload their work “online”, during the very writing process. This way, you can get feedback before the work is completed, that’s actually very useful, and it’s also just fun. When I started, I had no readers, except for a couple of LiveJournal friends who were following the updates. Then new readers slowly began to appear. When I was writing one of my very first novels, Westfold, which contained among other plot lines, a Robin Hood kind of theme, three readers commented on the website. That felt like a lot! I was so amazed by this fact that people discuss my characters and their deeds, as if they were talking about real-life people! And then the number of readers and commenters started to increase. After I had written several novels, my page had more than a thousand visits per day and was among the Top 100 on the website. And at a certain point I received e-mails from representatives of two big publishing houses, proposing to publish my books.

How did you come up with the title of your book?
There is a Russian singer (and a songwriter) whose songs I enjoy very much. And in one of my favorites, there are the following lines:
"You hate me so passionately,
Standing half a step away from love"
These lines gave the book its title.

Do you read romance or do you prefer other genres?
I like fantasy novels that involve both romance and adventures. So yes, I do enjoy reading books in the same genre in which I write. I suppose that’s quite natural. I also enjoy detective stories.

What is your absolute favorite book or books and why is it special to you?
“The Lord of the Rings”. This book has opened for me the world of fantasy, and since then, I am in love with this world.

What is the hardest part of the writing process for you?
Lack of time. When the ideas are already there in my head, but for reasons of time I have to write much more slowly than I would prefer.

What is the easiest part of the writing process for you?
Dialogues. I LOVE writing dialogues.

What is your preferred writing environment?
Home. Sitting on a sofa with my laptop. That’s just perfect.

Do you have a careful plan when plotting your stories or do you just go with the flow?
I MUST have a plan. By the time I start writing, I must have a very good idea about how the plot is going to develop. Some scenes may be added later on, of course.

When did you know you truly wanted to give writing a shot?
I started in the childhood. Afterwards, there were periods when I wrote something and periods when I didn’t, and it’s only about five years ago that I started writing regularly. First, poems, then short stories, and then I moved on to novels.

What is your favorite quote?
I don’t have a single favorite one. But there are numerous quotes I enjoy, for instance, ones from such authors as Oscar Wilde and Jane Austen. I actually used some of these quotes as epigraphs in “Half a Step Away from Love”.

Do you have any advice for other writers and what is it?
Inspiration should be priority number 1. Marketing, however important, must be ranked lower. Write what you really want to write about, be true to yourselves.

If you published under a pen name, why did you use a pen name and is there anything special about the pen name you chose?
My pen name, Olga Kuno, is also my maiden name. One editor suggested that I use it as a pen name, and I liked the idea.

Why did you want to be a writer?
Because I truly enjoy the process. It’s self-realization, which is very important for me. It’s a way to get immersed in a story, which actually makes it similar to reading. But writing allows me to create exactly the kind of story that I want. Or at least to try to do so. :)

Please tell us a little about yourself.
I am an avid dragon, anime romance fanfiction lover.  I suffer from aspergers, tourettes, depression, bipolar disorder and have slight PTSD from certain incidents in my past.  Although I am hesitant to spout the technicalities behind how this series began, I will say my co-author and I are still in the process of writing our series.  I feel D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) is a large inspiration for my work nowadays.

Tell us about your latest book.
The actual world in which The TalonFyre Chronicles, Book 1: A Second Chance, was originally based on the Legend of Spyro world, but I desired to pull this kind of idea and base it on Dungeons and Dragons instead.  In the the first book of the series, the odd and very dense 19-year old lava-blooded dragon mercenary known as TalonFyre meets a (seemingly)22-year old light dragon by the name of Flare.  Flare promptly  introduces him to his violence-loving, extremely tomboyish and exceptionally attractive 17-year old daughter, Hikari.  She almost instantly falls for him, despite his unromantic attitude and extreme unintelligence.  This book is about their struggles, the healing power of love, redemption, and the fact that you don’t have to be the same species to fall in love(see the two of the four side-characters, Ultimar and Mian).

What do you have coming out in the future?
The TalonFyre Chronicles, Books 2 and 3, The TalonFyre Epochs(a darker and more adult series taking place after the chronicles) and War of the Third Demon Parts 1, 2 and 3, the latter most being, the darker, complex-worded prequel to the series/history of the world in which The TalonFyre Chronicles takes place.  It will have multiple D&D-like qualities, a semi-large cast,  and may cause controversy due to the nature and traditions of said world.

Is your book a stand-alone or a series?
As stated before, both the Chronicles and the Epochs are part of the same series.  War of the Third Demon is a spinoff/prequel.

Why romance and what makes your particular brand of romance special?
It’s something that hasn’t been done that much before in an actual book series.  An anthro-romance novel about dragons.  What makes it truly interesting is that my aunt actually sometimes forgot they were dragons, but instead humans due to the fact that they have almost no bestial qualities in their personality whatsoever.  This, coupled with nearly zero instinct, causes it to be somewhat unique.  I hate to give spoilers, but later books will delve deep into interspecies romances as well.  Even with this, they are all still fully-sentient species.

Is romance the only genre that you write in or do you write in other genres? If so what other genres do you write in?
The TalonFyre Chronicles will mostly be romance, but will have multiple adventures qualities in later books.  War of the Third Demon will most likely be as follows - Part 1: Romance/ HurtComfort/Drama.  Part 2: Politics/Adventure/Romance/Drama/HurtComfort/War.  Part 3: War/Drama/Adventure/Romance/HurtComfort/Politics.
Picture
TalonFyre, a 19-year old former mercenary of war, is thrust into a life he never imagined he would live when he is awoken from an dormant state by a light dragon named Flare. This light dragon introduces him to his 17-year old daughter by the name of Hikari. This dragoness might just make his life complete, but will he be able to cope? Will his insecurity and past experience allow him to consider being with her? Even more so, will mercenary history even allow him to keep this life? Only time will tell.

From where do you draw your inspiration?
Originally Legend of Spyro/Animes.  Now it’s D&D/Animes/Dr. Who and multiple other series as well as my own imagination to be more original.

Do you ever base your characters on real people in your life?
Some characters are based on myself/others as well as their situations, albeit sometimes mixed and/or exaggerated.

What authors inspire your writing?
Piers Anthony, J.R.R. Tolken, Emily Roddda, Clare Keating and multiple fanfiction writers

What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Play video games, read fanfictions and watch anime

What was your road to publishing like? Tell us about it.
It was… interesting.  I was originally a fanfiction writer, but retired when I realized that it wasn’t something that could make money or a real impact on lives.  The TalonFyre Chronicles, although originally Spyro fanfiction, the world was completely revamped into a D&D-style with a multitude of species.  The Golems in War of the Third Demons will be basted of the personifications of different emotions/situations, etc. from mythology (I.E. Thanatos, Eros, Styx, Hypnos, Aergia and others)

How did you come up with the title of your book?
The TalonFyre Chronicles seemed to the a basic yet efficient name for the series.  The subtitle “A Second Chance” is due to TalonFyre having the decision to either give up his mercenary past or continue on the road to the destruction of his body, mind, heart and soul.

What is your absolute favorite book or books and why is it special to you?
Romance above all.  I really don’t know why.  Maybe it’s because I was always more feminine than masculine.

What celebrity would you chose to play the main character(s) in the movie rendition of your book?
TalonFyre: J.S. Gilbert’s Sweet Tooth Voice from Twisted Metal without the distortion as per the desire of my co-author.
Hikari: Anna Kingsley
Flare: Chris Niosi
Angel: Rachael Lillis
Ultimar: Vic Mignogna
Mian: Imogen Fox

Have you joined any writer’s groups?
GoodReads and a few DeviantArt Groups

Have you won any awards for your writing?
No, and I don’t expect to yet.

What is the hardest part of the writing process for you?
From a writer’s perspective, The TalonFyre Chronices would be translating the dialogue into a book format and coming up with the emotions behind the characters.  As for War of the Third Demon, that would be researching the effects of the characters’ traumas and mental problems.  From a mental perspective, any childbirth scenes.

What is the easiest part of the writing process for you?
The TalonFyre Chronicles: Taking the dialogue into the story.  War of the Third Demon: Coming up with ideas for species.

Which of your characters is your favorite and why?
Ultimar, because of his job, soft, kind heart, selflessness, and redemption story.

Who or what are your inspirations/influences?
Ronald Steven Lessiter, my co-author, Shalone Howard A.K.A. ShaloneSK on DeviantArt for the original designs of the dragon characters, Clare Keating A.K.A. echodusk on DeviantArt, Montecristo709 on fanfiction.net for his religious influences and ideas, animes/movies (mainly Shonen Jump, Monster Rancher and Studio Ghibli), multiple video games, Gary Gygax/Dave Arneson, Dragon City and other games like it, Dragon Heart, Legend of Spyro, Lord of The Rings and some histoical events

What is your preferred writing environment?
And here’s where my oddball personality comes out - FIND THE COMPUTER ROOM!!!

How would you describe your writing style?
The TalonFyre Chronicles is more common and laid back, while War of the Third Demon is complex-worded, semi-scientific, and makes elaborate comparatives.  Both have a very feminine style of writing, but the femininity is much more prominent War of the Third Demon.

Do you have a careful plan when plotting your stories or do you just go with the flow?
The dialogue for The TalonFyre Chronicles is pre-written, but for War of the Third Demon I have very few things pre-planned.  In short, for the latter I “go with the flow” more than a stereotypical laid-back surfer in a 90’s movie.

With many publishing routes available today, which felt the most reliable to you when it came to the many choices?
Amazon.  Echodusk told me it would be the best route to self-publish, and since she had published novella on there, I trusted her judgement.

When did you know you truly wanted to give writing a shot?
That’s a hard question.  In honesty I was always a good writer, but I stopped in high-school.  I think writing TalonFyre: Portrait of a Merc (the original fanficion.net version of The TalonFyre Chronicles) was actually something that got me back into writing.  It’s a passion now.

What is your favorite quote?
“Ultimate power ultimately corrupts”

Do you have any advice for other writers and what is it?
If you want to write, I suggest you look at the more professionally-written books.  If you have no interest in original stories, go to fanfiction.net or DeviantArt and read some of the few well-written stories of your preffered fandom.  If you truly want original ideas, you may want to find a D&D group, as the games you play will give you an extreme amount of inspiration, especially if your DM(Dungeon Master) is creative enough to make his own storyline and possibly even classes/abilities.  In fact, you and your friends can actually make a book out of your game if this is the case - just give credit where credit is due.

Wild Card Question.
As an author, what is the one question that you wish people would ask you, but no one ever has and what would your answer be to that question?

Do you think interspecies romances are wrong?
I am going to give an answer and then propose a series of questions - For my answer, I feel it depends if the species are both fully-sentient and the conditions of the romance.  Technically speaking, depending on the species it can be somewhat creepy.  However for my question we must ask ourselves this - what is the measure of man?  Do we consider “sentient” to be only applied to humans?  If so, is it because of ignorance, or is it because we have never met a specie with our reasoning and intelligence?  If we do, will be see it as “human” or “sentient” or will said ignorance blind us to the friendship or possibly loves that could come of accepting them into our fold?  If this world were to be populated with other sentient species, would it be for better or worse?  Would it cause humans to see that race is nothing but an illusion of physical traits?  I, for one, would welcome new sentient species into our world, providing they did not come to kill us, but rather live with us.  If they saw us as beneath them due to their power or technology, yet restrained themselves from doing horrible things due to it, I would see that as amazing restraint.  If even one saw that we are, in the end, equal, I would see that as amazing strength.  Who’s to say that any sentient species is better than another?  It would be the same as saying one race of humans is better, which is untrue, despite those who think otherwise.  In the end, are we not all mere “humans” of the same cosmos?

Zara Steen Interview

The guest author for today on Interviews with Dante is Zara Steen. She is a writer of Paranormal and Fantasy Romance for both Young Adults and Adults . Her latest work is Blue Moon Rising book two in the Mercrutian Chronicle.

Please tell us a little about yourself.
I absolutely love writing and reading Paranormal and Fantasy Romance. I'm from Atlantic Canada, where I let my adventurous spirit roam for inspiration. My main aim with my writing is to create meaningful stories with captivating characters in magical places. I hope to inspire readers with a sense of joy, excitement, love, and wonder.

Tell us about your latest book.
My latest book released on August 22, 2015 is Blue Moon Rising. It is a young Adult Fantasy Romance about a society of Mermaids co-existing with humans in Seabright, Nova Scotia. The female protagonist, Anya, returns home in this sequel to Heart of Shell (the first Mercrutian Chronicle), after transcending to a full Mermaid over the summer. Now she has new powers, a new and stronger sense of herself, and new challenges she'll face.

What do you have coming out in the future?
In December, I'll be releasing King of Shadows, the second book in the Arzulian Kingdoms Series. This will overlap with the first book in the series Prince of Fire to tell part of Salha's story from her perspective and then encompass all of the characters.

Is your book a stand-alone or a series?
Both of these books are part of a series but I do have a stand alone short story out right now called Eyesight. It is a quick enjoyable read in the New Adult Paranormal genre and was a winner of the Winter Solstice Short Story Contest.

Why romance and what makes your particular brand of romance special?
I would say that my brand of romance is fun and sometimes silly, but most importantly I support and explore healthy equal relationships between characters. My young adult books especially try to support positive ideas about relationships. I write females who are strong and don't define themselves only by love, they ask themselves questions to listen to their mind and hearts. I write males who don't feel obligated to follow traditional roles, and ask themselves questions about what they think or feel. I want my characters to express genuine love and affection to their counterpart without being archetypes.

Is romance the only genre that you write in or do you write in other genres? If so what other genres do you write in?
At this time I only write Romance. It's what I enjoy and I feel can have such a positive impact, so it is my area of focus.

In this sequel to Heart of Shell, Anya returns to Seabright changed. Summer has brought her deeper into the world of the Science Mers and what she's learning, she may not like. Meanwhile, Merrick seems the same, but keeps revealing more and more, despite Zale's attempts to curb his conversations with her. Now that The Depths are on the move, everything is changing for the Mers of Mercrutia.

From where do you draw your inspiration?
There are a lot of things that I find inspirational. Walks in nature can be especially helpful to create a sense of calmness and serenity that helps me with finding the right tone and voice. Generally with my ideas though they are eureka moments. An idea kind of pops into my mind and takes over. Suddenly I'm swept up into a scenario outside of myself and my curious nature wants to know more. So I ask myself questions and delve further into the tale. Characters will introduce themselves to me too, which sounds funny but is the easiest way to explain how it happens. I'll be daydreaming and they just pop into my head and say “Hello” because they have a story they want to be told.

Do you ever base your characters on real people in your life?
I think every writer does whether we intend to or not. I wouldn't say that my characters are specific people in my life, but I would confess that sometimes a gesture, a thought process, or a way a character says things are slightly influenced by people I know. I think when it really comes down to knowing a character, they are telling me who they are – it's up to me to figure them out rather than create them.

What authors inspire your writing?
When it comes to Romance: Sherrilyn Kenyon, Katie MacAlister, Nalini Singh, Marjorie M. Liu, and Lynsay Sands are some of my favorites. I admire their strong characters and their writing is always just what I need, a bit of intrigue and mystery, or some humor and laughs. I start reading and immediately I'm enveloped by the worlds they have written.

How have your real life experiences influenced your writing?
I'm very fortunate to have the love that I do in my life, with my partner, with my family, and with my friends. I believe all of those experiences influence the way I approach love and romance. I think because of the positivity and faith I have with these people no matter how dark or challenging a situation might appear my characters prevail.

Anya isn't your typical teenager─ she's mostly mermaid. Only the successful transformation to magic and beauty seem elusive to her. Relocating to Seabright, Nova Scotia she finds that there may be some hope for her, until suddenly things become more complicated, and complicated's name is Merrick Price. A teal eyed, dark haired Mer from a warrior family, he's hand picked her for his mate and she isn't quite sure why. She's a science Mer with no mermaid tail in sight and can't seem to uncover his true feelings or his motives.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Spending time with my loved ones is important to me. As well as taking time to have little adventures in nature. I find wildlife inspirational so I try to spend some time recuperating outdoors. I also like to mediate, craft, and read.

How did you come up with the title of your book?
It popped into my head. I wanted something that would make you think of mermaids. The moon is equally important to the Mer mythology in my books like water is so Blue Moon Rising seemed very approriate. The rarity of the situation and the historical connotations and meanings surrounding a blue moon are reflective of the undelying themes in the book.

What is the easiest part of the writing process for you?
Coming up with ideas is the easiest part for me. Sometimes I have too many ideas and I end up scribbling them all down and tucking them away for later when I'll get the chance to revisit. Once I have an idea,  from there the characters and places  and events flow very easily.

Which of your characters is your favorite and why?
I actually haven't written my favourite character yet. She's a guardian named Stitia from a world called Morianna. I'll be writing her story in a fantasy romance series in 2017.
If I had to choose a character from my current books though it would be challenging. I would say that Samira from Prince of Fire is my favourite female character and Merrick from Blue Moon Rising is my favourite male. I like Samira because she's tough and doesn't ever give up. No matter what life throws at her, she will perserveer. Merrick would be my favourite male because he gets overlooked sometimes. There's so many things about him that the reader will understand over time. He has a lot of layers and he's not always what he appears to be.

What is your preferred writing environment?
My home office. :) With a cup of hot tea, some instrumental music softly playing and my curtains open to an overcast or stormy day. There's something very magical about lightning, thunder, and rain that I find highly motivating. It might be the sense of awe.

How would you describe your writing style?
It is very creative and imaginate and I try to focus on also building a world that you find yourself engaged in exploring. My pacing is often fast with reflective moments for the reader to pause. There's a lot of action and positive dialogue going on.

Do you have a careful plan when plotting your stories or do you just go with the flow?
I use both, I typically know what will happen in a book and will plot it out but when it comes to writing I think it is a very organic and cylical process. I'll write chapters, shift them around for the sake of flow and sometimes fill things in in chunks. I'm not a very linear writer. I write in circles until I've completed each part of the curve.

With many publishing routes available today, which felt the most reliable to you when it came to the many choices?
Online publishing by myself and through online publishing companies are my choice right now. ePublishing has been really accessible, easy to use and I think something that a lot of authors are exploring now. To me an eBook felt reliable since they're so widely used. I do certainly love a hard copy of a book and so enjoy the tactile feeling of flipping a page, but I feel like focusing on ePublishing is the way to start, print can develop later.

Forthcoming 12/9/2015
When did you know you truly wanted to give writing a shot?
In my heart, I've always been a writer, but there are times when outside influences can drown out that love and that instinct to write. At the beginning of this year I decided I would change. I had written a book that I wasn't talking about and another book (Heart of Shell) was just sitting there waiting to be shared. I took a course in the early spring called Infinite Possibilites and it was then I realized I had all these stories I wanted to tell-- that's when I said to myself, okay let's do this... now or never.

What is your favorite quote?
“The secret to living the life of your dreams is to start living the life of your dreams today, in every little way you possibly can.” - Mike Dooley

Do you have any advice for other writers and what is it?
Keep writing. No matter what anyone ever says, there are millions of people out there waiting to read your book. The more you write, the better skills you acquire, so keep at it, and BE CONSISTENT. Write your plans out and know what you want to accomplish before you start writing. I don't start writing a book and know all of the ins and outs, but I do know that I will finish it and I think that's powerful in itself.

Forgive yourself too, you're going to make mistakes and someone will notice. Put your best efforts forward, and another person will think it's great. ; ) Writing involves a lot of evolution.

Wild Card Question.
As an author, what is the one question that you wish people would ask you, but no one ever has and what would your answer be to that question?

If you could ask your readers anything, what would it be?
I would ask for them to provide positive constructive feedback or reviews. I think we sometimes hesistate to connect with authors to let them know what we thought of their books, if we enjoyed them or that we're waiting for their next book to come out. For independent authors this is something that is highly motivating and so appreciated. Reading a review that someone enjoyed your book, or what they thought of your characters can be wonderful! It also helps us think of things we hadn't considered before. Plus on the bad days when we want to give up and throw in the towel, we then think, no I can't someone out there wants to know more.
